French Language

Learn French for Everyday Communication

Build your listening, speaking, reading and writing from a starting point that suits your current skills and goals.

Who is this program for?

The program can support learners who are starting French and those who want to build on what they already know.

Starting French

Begin with clear examples, useful words and supported practice from a suitable starting point.

Building existing skills

Strengthen listening, speaking, reading and writing in line with current skills and learning goals.

Three connected learning areas

These areas work together in one French Language Program. They are not separate courses or fixed levels.

Listening and speaking

Understand spoken French, respond to questions and take part in useful conversations with growing confidence.

Reading and writing

Read suitable French texts and practise writing words, sentences and ideas with increasing clarity.

Pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar

Practise French sounds, learn useful words and understand grammar through clear examples and meaningful situations.

What will learners practise?

The learning focus depends on the learner's starting point and goals. Learners may practise:

  • understanding spoken French and responding appropriately
  • taking part in short, useful conversations
  • reading and understanding suitable texts
  • writing words, sentences and connected ideas
  • improving pronunciation and building useful vocabulary
  • using grammar in speaking and writing
  • using feedback and working more independently over time

Progress is different for every learner. The program does not promise a fixed level, result or completion time.

Where should learning begin?

A suitable starting point considers what the learner already understands and can do, together with their learning goals.

The website does not currently provide a public French placement test, and no test is needed to open an inquiry.
